“Sturgeon Moon” Awes Greece

INTERNATIONAL: It’s one of the most beautiful sights you’ll see all week. The so-called “Sturgeon Moon” rose above Greece on Sunday night, with museums and archaeological sites opened late into the night. It was the Temple of Poseidon that provided the most stunning view of August’s full moon. It took barely half an hour for it to sit directly above the ancient temple.

Full moons are a big deal in Greece, as they are in other parts of the world, most especially in Asia. Various cultural events were organized around the country as part of the annual festival to honour the August full moon. A piano concert was held on the terrace of the Acropolis, with a view up to the illuminated Parthenon.

Moons were often given names by Native American tribes. August’s is referred to as the Sturgeon Moon, due to the fish that were caught during this time in the Great Lakes of North America. In Asia, next month’s full moon heralds the mid-Autumn festival.
